The Compressor

Postby lietez » 11 Jan 2012, 15:37

So i've been playing around with the compressor and thought i'd share some of my personal "presets" with you guys.

Mastering Compressor
-16Db Low Knee
0Db High Knee
3.0:1 Ratio
18ms Attack
440ms Release

Vintage Compressor
-20Db Low Knee
0Db High Knee
6.6:1 Ratio
15ms Attack
438ms Release

Drums Compressor
-12Db Low Knee
0Db High Knee
7.5:1 Ratio
10ms Attack
200ms Release

Vocal Compressor
-6Db Low Knee
0Db High Knee
4.0:1 Ratio
1.9ms Attack
3000ms Release

Now The Make-up gain you can set to fit your needs for the mix. Im still learning with the compressor so there might be better settings for it than what I am posting. Play around with it!

Also, Make sure to utilize the Parametric EQ! (Not the effect....).

I like to keep my drums seperate (low, mid, and high)
If you want a snappy snare, increase the release time and bring the high knee down to the low.

1.Could you explain what each compressor control does?

2.What can the effect EQ be used for?

It really depends on what you're trying to get with compressing. General settings are ok but they may not work on everything everyone is trying to do. Plus if ppl misuse it and clip the top of the meter making things sounding distorted, which if you're uloops track is played on a pro system, pray they have a limiter. I wish I could post pics cause its hard to explain. Also uloops compression aint THAT great. Just experiment, when I need snap, I usualy put the knees close(r) and back off the input, and bump output gain so you don't loose the sound in complication. Also I've not seen a threshold unless its masked in some other setting. Very important but hey.. Its a toy app ;)

In each individual high peaking instrument like a snare or kick, you should make a limiter for them with the compressor. Set the attack and realease to 0. That way when you put on a master compressor, those instruments wont mess up your whole entire mix by causing all elements of your song to be compressed tooo much. I know there are very few people that do this and it shows because all of a sudden their low and soft sounds that are meant to be low and subtle are now as loud as their kick and snare, and the kick and snare are now squashed distorted and smothered.

So the idea is to keep your levels low enough in the mix, limited, and eq'd properly so that they are readable with the right timbre for the song, so that you have enough headroom for mastering to be properly effective

I've adjusted the compression in every position and can't tell a difference in anything. Guess I'm jist an amateur.

Noob xD

Nah, it's not AS noticeable on pocketband (something they need to improve on) but there is a slight difference. When it comes to PB, even a slight difference makes all the difference in the world :D
