mastering mixing!!!!Part 1 recordings

Postby omni_jess » 26 Apr 2012, 06:26

ok now .......ya want to get clear sounding vocals and recordings..... here some basic tips

Dont'sbig mistakes ppl make
1.don't use Parametric Eq on vocals located in the _ Effect_box
2.don't put your recording volume to +6.0
3.don't put the master volume up it should not have to be touched if your mixing right

Do's
1.instead of the parametric EQ in the _ effects box option_ use the other Parametric EQ (its in grey) above the effects box.
The 3 dots signify how low or high the frequency will go "how low or high the recording will sound"
the first white dot on your left hand side effects the lows"bass"
the second dot in the middle is exactly that mids
and the one to the right is for the highs.

2.Recordings--once you've set the dots as pleased to get a better sounding recording "Clone it" depending on the recording it might be 2 or 3 clones . on the " send to effects channels" add just a tad of reverb and delay or as much as you'd like depending on the effect you want ,add desired effects in the Effects box. Now that you've done that it might get low again so you need atleast one recording with no effects at all .So if you have 2 recordings with effects try to have one with no effects at all ,the panning on that also has to be in the middle.

Any questions about more information you would like to know or something you don't understand please leave a comment

Any ideas on where to start putting the dots on the EQ? Obviously, everybody will be different, so they won't be right where you are. But...

1. Are there any "general" tips for vocals? Like, higher mids work a bit better than higher bass...

2. What have you found works for you, and what doesn't? Like, where do YOU usually start?

A general setting for the parametric EQ could look like this:

This gives the vocals a little more clarity and presence (well...for me at least. You might have to adjust a bit since we don't all have the same tone of voice!)

another general setting that will help clear up vocals is:

This will mostly clear out a little bit of background noise to bring your vocals out.

Like I said, you may need to make adjustments. Just thought i'd point you in the right direction.

It depends on your voice and how you capture the recording or sound ,what works for my vocals is the mids because im an alto-sopr2

about the dots if you move all of them spaced like this ---> . ' . towards the right it becomes sharp do the opposite all the way to the left it gets muffled play around with it again it depends on the sound you've captured

Very good thread. Proper EQ balance is the key to mastering/mixing a track.

Don't forget about compression! Very handy for "snappy" vocals :D
